Chapter Ten

“Come in and make yourselves at home,” Tom said, as the group reached his house. Pushing the door open, he welcomed them over the threshold. He lived very near to Jimmy’s house, just a short walk away. Again, Lisa found herself wondering why Jimmy would choose to live in an anonymous apartment when he had what seemed like close family so nearby.

“Tom? Is everything alright?” A musical voice called from inside the house.

“Yeah, everything’s fine, hon. I hope it’s ok, I’ve brought guests for breakfast.”

“Morning, Sarah!” Jimmy called. Tom carried on into the kitchen, while Jimmy kicked his work-boots off in the hallway. Lisa grabbed Zach by the hand, hanging back slightly. She felt awkward, intruding on a strange family so early and uninvited.

“Maybe we should go back home,” she whispered to Jimmy, already eyeing her chance at a retreat. “I don’t want to put your sister out –”

“Jimmy?” the voice called. “Is that you?” A pretty woman in a wheelchair pushed herself through the kitchen into the hallway and towards where they stood. “Get over here and give your little sister a hug!” she demanded, smiling up at him.

Jimmy did as instructed, and Lisa couldn’t help but smile herself when she saw the warm embrace the two siblings shared. Jimmy dropped down to a squat, so they were eye to eye, sharing a few quiet words that didn’t carry.

“Zach, are you a chocolate milk man, by any chance?” Tom called from the kitchen. “And Lisa, come on in, grab a seat. I’ll make some fresh coffee – or do you prefer tea?”

Zach pulled out of his mother’s grasp and headed into the kitchen before she could stop him, and Lisa felt awkwardly adrift in the doorway, reluctant to intrude, but with nowhere to retreat to.

“Um...whatever you’re making is fine, thanks,” she murmured, trying not to stare at Jimmy and his sister, which just made her feel even more awkward.

“Lisa?” the warm female voice called to her.

“I’m sorry,” Lisa said, biting her lip. “I didn’t realize we would be imposing – and at breakfast time –”

“It’s no imposition!” Sarah laughed. “Please, go on into the sitting room and relax. I’ll just check my husband is actually making something decent for breakfast and not just frying anything he can lay his hands on, and then maybe you and I can get acquainted.” Her brown eyes, the same warm chocolate color as Jimmy’s, twinkled at her, and she pushed her wheelchair into the kitchen. Lisa could make out Zach’s cheerful voice chirping away with another young child, who she took to be Tom and Sarah’s daughter.

The two children emerged, and the small blonde girl tugged on Jimmy’s pant leg. He pretended not to notice.

“Uncle Jimmy!” she hissed.

Jimmy glanced around, making-believe he hadn’t seen her. “Who said that?”

“Me!” she said, tugging again.

“Oh, you!” He bent down and shook her hand, seriously. “Hello, Madeleine. How are you this morning?”

They held each other’s gaze in silence for a long moment, before both dissolving in giggles.
